Employment Law changes in April.

Following various Government bills a number of changes in Employment Law come into force in April, a brief outline of the changes are listed below to help Employees and Employers understand the changes and impact they will have.

Managing sickness absence.


A new advisory service will start in April called the, 'Health and work assessment', its focus will be on providing free occupational health assistance for workers and employers, the new service will be able to provide an assessment after a period of four weeks absence.

Changes in statutory pay rates.


These are to be increased for-

- Maternity, paternity, adoption and parental leave will increase to £139.58 per week.
- Statutory sick pay will rise to £88.45 per week.
- Statutory adoption leave, changes and pay

The 26 week period to qualify for adoption is to be abolished, and adoption pay will follow the same regulations as maternity pay, 90% of normal earning for the first six weeks.

Parental Leave changes.


The right for a parent to take unpaid parental leave has been changed to include any child up to the age of 18.

Adoption leave for Surrogate parents.

Assuming the parents meet the eligibility criteria, a parent who has a child through surrogacy will be entitled to take ordinary paternity leave/absence for adoption and shared parental absence and associated pay.

In addition parents will also be able to be in attendance for up to two antenatal appointments, which must be taken unpaid.
