Microchip implants for Employees?

Sometimes when you read a headline you feel it is so farfetched that it must be an April fool, this is one such headline, but when you understand what it’s all about your opinion changes, well mine does, and perhaps now I am sitting on the proverbial fence.

The idea of implanting microchips in employees seems to be lifted straight from a George Orwell novel, but in the past year 150 employees have willingly had implants fitted to ‘improve security’.

The implants fitted between your thumb and forefinger can enable you to open doors, start your car and store data but I have keys that do that so what is the benefit to me? Perhaps it’s more sinister- at the end of the day why would my employer care about how I start my car?

The concern is that the chips, whilst doing a great job of opening doors, will also collect data about productivity and erode an employee’s privacy.

To counter this, the biotic firms that provide the chips point to a saving in producing ID passes, really? Mark my words, change is coming, whilst we may not like the idea of an employer chipping its employees, what if you could have your train ticket for the year chipped or an implant that monitors and sends medical data? I believe more people would be happy to do it, for millennials that seem glued to their tech these implants may be just another way of making life more convenient.

Perhaps I am just getting cynical in my old age but is this not an Employer becoming the ultimate Big Brother?
