When you are a victim in a abusive relationship it is not easy to get out, in many victims minds they feel they have let the relationship down, and that the relationship will improve or there is the fear of further violence if their partner finds out they are thinking of leaving, these or many other factors can keep someone in a relationship, feeling trapped.

Domestic violence is not just physical violence, it can take many forms, which a person may use to control a partner, and these can be sexual, emotional, physiological, financial as well as physical.
There are many excuses for abuse, lot's of them are made up by the victim to protect their partner, or as a reason why they have not left the relationship, these can be stress, alcohol, upbringing, environmental, loss of temper, however, none of these reason or any others justify a person remaining in a abusive relationship.
If you are a victim you may be scared not just of leaving but of the repercussions to you or your partner once you do, you are not alone 1 in 4 women will suffer some sort of domestic abuse in their lifetime.
Most people will speak to someone they trust, this is a good thing but remember they are not trained and may not understand the full situation.
We would recommend that you call the National Domestic Violence Helpline run by Women's Aid and Refuge, the line is open to call 365 days a year, 24 hrs a day.

Your first step is to understand that you are a victim and that help is available, domestic abuse normally gets worse.
You may not wish to leave the family home, disrupt your children's life or put your partner through any 'shame' through their actions.
Help is available to explain the process and if necessary to provide safe accommodation for you and your children.
They will explain what happens to contact with the children, what will happen to your partner and what will happen long term.
The important fact is to understand that you do not have to be a victim anymore, and that help is available every step of the way.
You may have concerns about how to leave, money, legal repercussions - help is available for all these concerns.
