An employment expert has urged employers not to make their staff redundant.

Steve Huxham, chairman of The Recruitment Society, said anything that forces people to be out of work has little economic benefit.

He stressed that active working people contribute far more to the economy that 'idle people' and pointed out that National Insurance hikes could have a negative overall impact.

'I don't think that anything that makes employers think twice about taking on a few extra staff is wise at all,' Mr Huxham said.

'It is employers that create wealth and they create that also through employing staff.'

He added that one of the main reasons unemployment figures have not risen as fast as the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development predicted last year is that employers have worked hard to keep their staff.

According to the Office for National Statistics, on January 20th 2010, the number of unemployed people fell by 7,000 over the quarter to reach 2.46 million.
