The Queens Speech.

June 2014

The Queen will today give her final speech under the coalition Government when she opens parliament (4th June).

The government have said that today's speech will have a bias towards work and business, but many have said that they are using the opportunity to start a long re-election campaign with the reforms focused on votes rather than good government.

Some of the measures expected to feature are:

. The much publicised pension reforms announced in the budget -
the new bill will allow people much more freedom with their pension fund. the new reforms mean you will not have to purchase an annuity and will be able to draw down the whole pension fund.

. More on pensions with the introduction of a new type of pension scheme to allow employees to pay into collective pension funds shared with other workers, a system that has proved successful in Holland.

. Changes to child care subsidy - the existing employee funded scheme is to be replaced by a state funded scheme.

. Enhanced legal protection for people carrying out good deeds, who end up being involved in liability claims because of their actions.

. Plans to stop top public sector workers taking redundancy, only to return to work in the area.

. Reforms which will prove contentious, to allow fracking firms to run pipelines on private land without the need to obtain prior permission.

. New criminal sentencing for those assisting and profiting from crime, including tougher powers to seize the assets of crime bosses.

. Many of the papers have focused on help to be given to pub landlords including a statutory code and a body to adjudicate disputes, including the right for a review after five years, with a study showing that pubs that are tied are being forced to buy supplies at high street prices from the pub companies that own the property.

. Power to the voters! - in the event that your MP has committed a wrong doing, new rules will give all voters the power to force a by-election.

More details will follow over the next few days. It will be interesting to see if the speech will be embraced by the media as "pro-work, pro-business and pro-aspiration" or will they pick up on the introduction of the 5p charge to be introduced on supermarket plastic bags, championed by The Mail? My guess is the bags have it over some very poor headline puns about landlord reforms.

We would have expected changes to the Zero working hours contracts in a pro-work speech, we will see.

Watch this space for more details.
