The firm was founded by Dr. Frederick Goodwin in 1889 in Hastings. Three years later, Ralph Gaby became a partner in the firm. After Goodwin retired from the partnership in 1894, Gaby continued the practice alone until Allen Hardwicke joined as a partner following the First World War. The firm was then renamed to reflect the change in partnership.
