McGarry & Co

McGarry and Co began in Barnard Castle in 2011, when Michael McGarry opened a single office in Galgate. We have grown steadily since then, and in a particular direction: out into the dales and the market towns rather than into the cities. Hawes followed in 2012, Sedbergh in 2015, Leyburn in 2017, and a Darlington team joined us in 2023.

In 2025 we were joined by Smith Roddam, a long-standing County Durham practice whose Bishop Auckland office is old enough that the first mortgage ever granted by the Bishop Auckland Permanent Building Society was executed there in 1857. Between us, we now work from ten offices across County Durham, the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria, and Smith Roddam carries on under its own name in the towns that have always known it by that name.

We call ourselves a full-service rural law firm, and the rural part is not decoration. A great deal of what we do involves land, farms and the particular difficulties that come with them, and we are a second-generation firm now, which in this part of the world still counts for something. We hold the Conveyancing Quality Scheme accreditation and Cyber Essentials certification, and our people belong to STEP, the Association of Lifetime Lawyers and the Agricultural Law Association.
