Our history.


The story of Girlings began in 1881 when Walter Hills, a sole practitioner, set up an office in Margate. Today, we are one of the oldest and largest law firms in Kent, with our head office in Canterbury and additional offices in Ashford and Herne Bay. Our growth has been primarily organic, although we have strategically acquired several well-respected firms along the way. The Girlings name first appeared over the door in 1944, and two generations of the Girling family have since worked at the firm. Tony Girling, a former President of the Law Society, also worked here until his retirement in 2000. He was known for his expertise in costs, funding, and client care issues.
