GT Stewart was established in 2003 by a group of committed lawyers who fought for clients, regardless of their ability to pay privately or their need for legal aid. The changing climate for the law and publicly funded work led us to recognize that law firms must adapt to survive.


This adaptation required well-trained and adaptable lawyers who possessed the skills and tenacity to withstand the greater antipathy towards those who represented people accused of crime, especially if it was funded at the public"s expense. Central to this was advocacy throughout the case and continuity of representation. We developed IT and case management systems to stay ahead of our competitors. We created specialist teams to handle specific areas of law and then expanded into complementary areas. If other firms no longer wanted to continue with legally aided work, we accepted their lawyers, provided they were good enough.


Presently, the firm has a national network of offices with over 175 staff. It has been nominated and shortlisted for many legal awards, and it is recommended in the leading legal directories - Chambers UK and the Legal 500. Most recently, it acquired the highly regarded FMW Law team in Hammersmith to continue its expansion. We believe bigger is stronger, as long as we do not forget that every client really does matter.
